Google released a beta version of Google Sync service which automatically synchronize users’ Gmail contacts and Google Calendar events in the background.

Google released a beta version of Google Sync service which automatically synchronize users’ Gmail contacts and Google Calendar events in the background.

At the moment, only iPhone and Windows Mobile phones can sync Google Calendar data (and Gmail contacts as well), but many other devices (that have SyncML) are supported for Gmail contacts only.

Here are some tips before you start to do the job:

iPhone users: Google Sync will remove all existing contacts and calendar events from your phone, so make sure to back up (PC instructions, Mac instructions) your data before you set it up.

Remove contacts that you don’t want to sync to your phone. From the "My Contacts" section of the contact manager, select the contact you want to remove, click "Groups" and then "Remove from My Contacts."

Merge duplicates so friend@theirgmailaddress.com and samefriend@theirworkaddress.com both belong to the same contact. To do so, select both contacts, and click "Merge these 2 contacts." When you merge contacts, your address auto-complete won’t work as well as before. We’re working on a fix for this, but until that’s out you might notice addresses showing up in a suboptimal order in auto-complete, e.g. your friend’s work address coming up first when you’re used to emailing their Gmail address.

When you ready, visit Google Sync homepage, select your phone model, the get started following the instruction.

Note: Most Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones support SyncML.

Gmail just added a new feature into Gmail Labs – the Tasks. It enables the user to create to-do list inside your Gmail box, handy!

To use this experimental function, go to Settings > Labs, select Enable next to Tasks description, scroll down the page and Save Changes.

At this time, you will see a new link of Tasks in the left sidebar, right under Contacts. Click the link, the tasks window will show up on right hand side.

Tips

Create new task – Click anywhere in the tasks windows and start typing; hit ENTER; press the plus button “+”.

Create new task list – Click the list button(right bottom corner, the right-most one), will show you options to manage task list, you can refresh current list, make new list, rename current list, delete current list and switch to another list of course.

Keyboard Shortcuts – ENTER creates new task; TAB and SHIFT-TAB indent and un-indent, CTRL-UP and CTRL-DOWN let you reorder from the keyboard, and SHIFT-ENTER toggles back and forth between the detailed view for a task and the main view.

Things I like

Add to Tasks – You can create a new task from a mail by selecting More Actions > Add to Tasks, or by shortcut key shift-t (enable in Settings > General).

Pop-out – You can view your tasks in a separate window if you like.

Drag-Drop – You can drag and drop a task and reorder it.

Things I expect

It’s better if we can put it in left sidebar.

How do you think about this new lab feature, will you use Gmail as your personal task manager?

If you are fan of Gmail, you may also want to check my previous post about Gmail gadget for Google Desktop.
